Virtual classrooms, recorded lessons, digital assessments, discussion boards, cloud-based collaboration, adaptive learning systems and AI-assisted tools now form part of the learning experience for millions of students.

Online education provides flexibility, access and continuity. Students can review material repeatedly, participate from different locations, use assistive technologies, communicate asynchronously and move through selected tasks at an individual pace. For some learners, these features reduce social pressure and create space for thoughtful participation. For others, however, the same environment creates difficulties involving concentration, isolation, procrastination, weak routines, digital distraction and reduced emotional connection.

An important distinction is that well-designed online learning is not the same as emergency remote teaching. Hodges and colleagues explained that carefully planned online education involves deliberate course design, learner support, interaction strategies and assessment methods, whereas emergency remote teaching is a temporary crisis response (Hodges et al., 2020). It also considers positive behavioural outcomes and practical strategies for creating online learning environments that support independence without producing isolation or unmanaged digital overload.

Understanding Online Learning as a Behavioural Environment

More Than a Change of Location

Online learning is often described simply as education delivered through the internet. Behaviourally, however, it represents a major change in the learning environment. In a physical classroom, time, space, routines and social expectations are externally organised. The student arrives at a location, sits among peers, sees the teacher, experiences transitions between lessons and receives immediate social signals about participation.

In an online environment, many of these external structures become weaker or invisible. Students may need to decide when to begin, how to organise materials, whether to turn away from notifications, when to ask for help, how to remain visible in a discussion and how to separate learning time from leisure. This creates a greater demand for self-regulation.

The OECD’s work on student engagement in digital learning environments ↗ highlights the importance of meaningful engagement rather than mere platform presence (OECD, 2021). A student may be technically logged in while behaviourally disengaged. Attendance data therefore cannot substitute for evidence of attention, participation, understanding and task completion.

A structured learner may thrive online when routines, goals and feedback are clear. Flexible timing can increase independence, allow repeated review and reduce unnecessary travel or social pressure.

A vulnerable learner may disappear quietly. Weak routines, poor connectivity, family stress, low confidence or emotional difficulty can produce missed work, camera avoidance, silence and disengagement that are less visible than disruptive behaviour in a physical classroom.

A supported learner benefits from deliberate structure. Regular check-ins, predictable schedules, social interaction, clear task boundaries and timely feedback can transform the same digital environment from isolating to empowering.

Flexibility Can Support or Weaken Behaviour

Flexibility is one of online learning’s greatest strengths, but it is not automatically beneficial. A student with mature self-management may use flexibility to plan effectively. A student who lacks time-management skills may postpone work until deadlines create panic. The same feature can therefore strengthen autonomy in one learner and reinforce procrastination in another.

Online lessons sometimes place multiple channels of information on the student at once. A learner may need to listen to the teacher, watch slides, monitor the chat, respond to a poll, download a file and follow instructions in another window. When these demands are poorly sequenced, the learner spends mental effort managing the interface rather than understanding the subject.

UNESCO’s technology report warns against assuming that more technology automatically means better learning and notes that the quality and relevance of use matter (UNESCO, 2023). Teachers can reduce cognitive overload by simplifying visual layouts, sequencing tasks, limiting simultaneous channels, building short pauses for reflection and clearly signalling where students should focus. The objective is not to make every lesson entertaining. It is to protect enough mental space for students to think.

Social Isolation and Reduced Interpersonal Practice

Learning Is Social as Well as Academic

Physical classrooms provide behavioural learning that is difficult to measure. Students practise waiting for a turn, interpreting tone, recognising discomfort, repairing misunderstandings, negotiating disagreement, sharing space and reading the emotional atmosphere of a group. These experiences contribute to social confidence and emotional maturity.

Online communication can preserve connection, but it changes the available signals. Video delay, camera positioning, muted microphones, text-only responses and limited informal conversation can reduce spontaneity. Students may become highly competent at typed communication while receiving fewer opportunities to practise difficult face-to-face interactions.

This does not mean that online communication is inferior in every situation. Some students participate more confidently through chat, asynchronous discussion or smaller virtual groups. The important educational task is to maintain a variety of communication modes rather than allowing one mode to replace all others.

When educators analyse student interaction, non-verbal behaviour should be interpreted cautiously and in context. At the same time, learners can experience fatigue, loneliness, uncertainty, frustration with technology and anxiety about falling behind.

Extended periods of screen-based concentration, repetitive video meetings and reduced movement can produce exhaustion. Students may become irritable, impatient or emotionally flat even when academic demands have not increased.

A student who previously participated may stop using the chat, avoid group work, miss sessions or submit less work. These changes should be explored as patterns rather than treated as proof of laziness.

Some students experience stress from being watched on camera, speaking into silence, seeing their own image continuously or worrying about home backgrounds, family interruptions and technology failure.

The WHO Regional Office for Europe has emphasised that relationships between digital environments and youth mental health are complex and bidirectional. This is an important caution for schools: heavy device use may be a cause, consequence or coping response, and sometimes several processes occur together.

Accordingly, behavioural support should move beyond simple screen-time blame. Schools need to ask what the student is doing online, what function the behaviour serves, whether sleep and movement are affected, how relationships have changed and what support is available.

Motivation, Self-Discipline and Academic Behaviour

The Shift from External Control to Self-Management

Traditional classrooms provide external cues: bells, teacher proximity, visible peers, fixed seating and scheduled transitions. Online learning transfers more responsibility to the student. This can develop independence, but it can also reveal gaps in planning, task initiation and emotional regulation.

Common difficulties include procrastination, irregular attendance, late submission, incomplete tasks and avoidance of help-seeking. These behaviours often interact. A student delays one task, begins to fall behind, feels embarrassed, avoids contact and then accumulates more unfinished work. What begins as poor time management can become complete disengagement.

Motivation Requires More Than Reminders

Repeated notifications may increase compliance temporarily but do not necessarily strengthen motivation. Teachers cannot reliably infer concentration from camera status alone. A camera-off student may be disengaged, but may also have poor bandwidth, privacy concerns, disability-related needs, family responsibilities or anxiety. A camera-on student may still be multitasking.

Effective monitoring therefore uses multiple indicators: participation patterns, quality of responses, task completion, changes over time, contact with the student and opportunities for low-pressure help-seeking.   10. How will the intervention be monitored for improvement, recurrence and unintended effects?

Strategies for Healthier Online Learning Behaviour

1. Build Predictable Routines

Students benefit from consistent start times, visible weekly plans, regular breaks and clear deadlines. Predictability reduces the amount of mental effort spent deciding what to do next.

2. Design for Active Participation

Long periods of one-way video transmission encourage passivity. Teachers can use questioning, problem-solving, short reflection tasks, polls, peer explanation and application exercises to create active cognitive participation.

3. Protect Social Connection

Small-group work, peer support, mentoring and informal check-ins help maintain belonging. UNESCO’s distance-learning guidance recommends creating communities and maintaining regular human interaction to address the psychosocial challenges of isolation (UNESCO, 2023).

4. Teach Attention Management Explicitly

Students should learn practical strategies such as closing unrelated tabs, disabling non-essential notifications, using task lists, setting study intervals and recovering attention after distraction. Digital discipline is a skill that can be taught and practised.
